Starting Small in a New Industry

The Kia story begins in 1944 under the name Kyungsung Precision Industry. A small company back then, its aim was to bring the joy of wheeled transportation to Korea, a country that had little exposure to modern vehicles. In 1952, Kia unveiled the Samchully, Korea’s first bicycle, and it was an instant success. It brought mobility to many and fueled a desire within Kia to keep pushing boundaries.

In the early 60s, Kia pivoted to motorized two- and three-wheeled vehicles. In 1961, it launched the Kia Honda C-100, and a year later, it produced the Kia-Mazda K-360, Korea's first three-wheeled vehicle. This was a breakthrough moment. With the K-360’s popularity, Kia had found its groove and launched a string of vehicles that quickly became iconic.

Kia Pride enters U.S. soil

Paving the Way for a New Era in Korean Automobiles

Throughout the 1970s, Kia continued to innovate. The Brisa made history in 1974 as Korea’s first passenger car and quickly became known as the “People’s Car.” The Brisa marked Kia’s arrival in the auto industry with a bang, bringing affordable, reliable cars to Korean families. This period also saw the birth of another Kia classic—the Pride, which would go on to be the first Korean car to reach one million units in production.

Kia’s ambitions were growing fast, and by 1987, the Pride made its way to the U.S., signaling Kia’s international arrival. Alongside the Pride was the Concord sedan, Kia’s foray into the midsize market. And if that wasn’t enough to show Kia’s versatility, in 1993, the Sportage SUV completed the grueling Paris-Dakar Rally, proving Kia was ready to compete with the best.

Merging and Thriving Globally

As the 90s rolled around, Kia was facing industry challenges but kept its momentum. The major turning point came in 1998, when Kia merged with Hyundai to form what would become the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group, now the world’s fifth-largest automaker. This partnership allowed Kia to expand its resources, research, and market reach on an unprecedented scale.

The 2000s brought even more change. Kia launched the Optima, a sleek and sporty sedan that showed Kia could blend practicality with style. And then came 2006, when Kia hired Peter Schreyer, a renowned automotive designer, as its chief design officer. This move was game-changing. Schreyer infused Kia’s lineup with a signature look—sharp, bold, and unforgettable. His contributions to models like the Optima and Soul put Kia on the map as a design-focused brand. This fresh image earned Kia a spot on Interbrand’s 100 Best Global Brands list in 2012, placing Kia squarely among automotive titans.

Innovations That Drive Kia Forward

What sets Kia apart today? It’s a mix of cutting-edge design, groundbreaking technology, and a commitment to making driving more enjoyable and eco-friendly. Kia’s investment in electric vehicles (EVs) is a prime example. Models like the Kia EV6 aren’t just fuel-efficient—they’re paving the way toward a sustainable future.

And Kia’s tech offerings don’t stop with EVs. The brand has taken connectivity to a new level with UVO, its advanced telematics system that allows drivers to remotely control key functions of their vehicle. You can adjust the climate, check the battery, and even lock or unlock the car—all from an app on your phone.

On top of that, Kia’s safety systems have evolved tremendously. They offer features like blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking as standard in many models. Kia is making safety accessible to all drivers, not just those who can afford luxury cars.

The Iconic Models That Define Kia

Kia’s lineup is filled with memorable models that have defined its journey. The Soul, with its boxy, funky design, has attracted a loyal fanbase and become something of a pop culture icon. Then there’s the Telluride, an SUV that has taken the market by storm. Known for its spacious interior, rugged build, and high-end features, the Telluride has earned a slew of awards and even topped charts as one of the most popular SUVs in the U.S.

The Sportage remains a staple, continuously evolving and adapting to new trends and technologies. It started as a compact SUV and has grown into a tech-savvy, versatile vehicle that caters to families and adventure-seekers alike. And let’s not forget the Stinger, Kia’s bold attempt to enter the luxury sports car market. With its stunning design and powerful engine, the Stinger has shown that Kia can go toe-to-toe with European brands in the performance category.

Kia Today and Beyond

Today, Kia is a force in the global market, selling cars in more than 180 countries. Its overseas sales have exceeded 50 million units, a feat that speaks volumes about the brand’s appeal and reputation.

Kia’s commitment to quality, innovation, and style has made it a top choice for American consumers looking for reliability without compromising on aesthetics or features. Auction Direct USA proudly offers a range of pre-owned Kia models, from the versatile Sportage to the family-friendly Telluride, and we can’t wait to see where Kia goes next.
